Memories

As I write this post I am a little sad but excited to show you the before's and after's of our sweet Junk Chic Cottage II.

As you know from my last post we are going to be selling this place we have called home for the past 9 months.  With Terry beginning a new chapter in his career as a Fire Chief we will be moving closer to the community he serves.  So this place will go up for sale soon.

I wanted to show you today in this post what a little bit of imagination, lots of white paint!! and some elbow grease can do to make a new place your own.

I will show you the before pic of what the room looked liked when we moved in and then the after of how it looks now.

Seriously most of the work was just in painting and taking down a few cabinets etc.  So for a little time and effort you can transform just about any space to make it your own.

Warning: Get a nice snack and beverage before starting to read this post.  It is a long one!!!!

Here Goes!

This is the house when we moved in.  Nice landscaping with manicured bushes and lava rock beds.

To make it personal to me I added color with flowers.  I am all about garden flowers and adding color to make the house pretty.  Easy peasy to make a huge change and personalize the outdoor space.

This is the backyard of our town home.  We are an end unit which is very nice.  This is how it looked when we moved in May.

This patio space just needed some perennials to open up and adding of my annuals.

My lovely slipcovered lounger where I read and soak up the summer sun.  I put that old white table out next to my lounger and added flowers.  Love mixing vintage salvage pieces to the garden.

This was the entry way when we moved in.

Painting the walls Snow Drift by Behr and the front entry door white opened up this entry way and made it more my taste.  Of course had to add a chandelier and some vintage salvage decor.

This was the living room when we moved in.

This is the living room now with Snow Drift Behr color on the walls and adding some white crown molding.

The space becomes cottage with all my chippy white decor.

Dining room when we moved in.

Dining room after we painted Snow Drift Behr color to all the walls.

This place is small so I was glad to get my china cabinet and table and chairs in this area.  Lots of light comes into the dining area.

Kitchen when we moved in.  Basic cabinets and counter tops.

Taking cabinets down to open up the space and using open shelving.  Painting walls and using Ikea Butcher Block counter tops.

Master Bedroom when we moved in.

The After Master Bedroom.
White paint, salvage decor pieces and new sheers and paint on the walls gave this bedroom a more personal touch reflecting my love of romance and serenity in the bedroom.

Master Bathroom when we moved in.

Painting the walls Snow Drift by Behr and painting the cabinets white and adding chandeliers for lighting personalized this bathroom to my taste.

Love adding chippy salvage history pieces into my decor for everyday use.

Guest bedroom before.

A fresh coat of Snow Drift by Behr to the walls and adding my decor was all this room needed to be personalized to my cottage decor taste.

Guest Bathroom Before.

Guest bathroom after we painted the walls and added chippy salvage pieces to the decor.  I got a serene and peaceful bathroom for my guests to use.

Our downstairs finished room before picture.

Before picture of finished family room.

After picture of our new family room/ fireman cave and office area.

We left the painted walls the color that was here.  It went well with our family room furniture and all of Terry's fireman collection.  Whew... big room we did not have to paint white!  This room reflects more of Terry's decor style and personality.  I love that he has a special place in this home too.

Even little Coopers bed matches this room.

Whew!!! this was a long post I hope you had a frosty beverage while you read through this post.  So in just a few months time and lots of paint we added our personality to this home.  With Terry unemployed when we purchased this home we did not have a decorating budget so lots of imagination and paint is what got this place turned around to our taste.  We had all our decor and collections from our last cottage.

With some elbow grease and paint you can make any room in your home your style without a lot of money!  This is proof of it!

I will miss this place we have called home these past months.  Just praying and hoping we can find another sweet place to call home again.

Have a great week.  I will be out of commission with blogging for a short time.  I tore my meniscus in my right knee a week ago.  I will see the Orthopedic Surgeon tomorrow to see if I will need surgery to repair it.   I will have a little time away from the blog to mend.

I tell ya getting older is not for Sissies.  I was just walking and turned my knee wrong and tore it.  Yikes!!!!  So I am hobbling around and using a cane to walk.  Yep! I am officially an old lady now with having a cane to walk lol!

Take care.  I hope to be back to making a post soon.  Maybe some good news on house hunting to share.  Just need to get my knee back and working.

Have a great new week.
Hugs,
Kris

  4. Oh Kris, you certainly turned this cottage into a show stopper. It is truly beautiful and I bet it will sell quickly. Just be sure to take down all your chanties before you put it on the market.

So sorry about your knee, welcome to old age, just kidding. Yes, after 50 you have to be careful. I am so lucky to get around as much as I do. But, I just will not sit down and get OLD, not if I can walk, hobble or whatever. Do take care of it now, as you know being a nurse, it will bother you forever. I hope that it can be corrected by therapy and rest.

I am so happy that Terry has a job. What city does he work in and where will you be looking for a home?

Lots of love and best wishes for a speedy recovery on your knee.

    Hugs,
    Mary

  6. Beautiful post Kris, such a transformation and the next lucky family have a clean slate where they can express themselves. Love everything and take care, knees are a pain at any age. They made me wait 10 years or to the point the knee was basically falling off,...so good luck. Sandi

  11. Kris, I hate that you are hurting. Hope the surgery goes well...or whatever they will do for you. I love the way your house turned into a home with you and Terry working side by side. You'll make another place just as sweet. It may take a bit longer, but when you know you have the time and no deadlines, you'll be fine. I am so happy Terry has a great job he so very much deserves. You are a good woman loving and encouraging him every step of the way. I wish you both the best. Please pop in and visit us every once in awhile. Blessings, xoxo, love, Susie

  12. Oh Kris - your home is so gorgeous. I know God will send the right person to buy and love it. I had the same knee problem and the surgery was a snap. Walked out of the hospital. Relief was immediate. So don't hesitate or put it off with all you have to do in the next few months.

    Praying for you.

  24. Kris the transformation to your house that you and Terry did in quick time is warm, inviting and pretty. Selling it surely is bittersweet and since we are friends I know how hard and trying the past 2 years have been. I applaud your determination and positive outlook you demonstrated to us all. Selling this home to move and go through all the labor of love and tons of white paint once again will be worth it in the end. Hopefully the new caretakers of Junk Chic cottage 2 will love your home and the next chapter of your "décor crazy" (your words) can began.

  25. WOW. Well here's the good news. YOUR FURNITURE and treasures are what did the transformation job here, and you will carry them with you to the next place. White paint and vintage finds will do the trick every time. We just got a new white door installed yesterday in our kitchen and that alone has done WONDERS! I can't wait to paint!

YOU will find a new home. You are already ahead of the game with your furnishings my friend!

  29. I don't think I've ever seen such a transformation in such a short time! You guys have been working your butts off! If there's a bright spot to Terry's unemployment, it's that he was available to help with the transformation :).

Sorry about your knee. BTDT. The decision to have surgery is tricky. Sometimes therapy can help, but tears rarely fix themselves. It's not major surgery though, and the recovery isn't long, something I'm sure you're concerned about with everything going on.

I'm taking a break too (but not from commenting lol). Internet isn't great here and we've been busy too. Take care of that knee!

    XXX

P.S. You should buy stock in Behr! LOL

  30. You and Terry created a miracle. But it really isn't just that simple for some of us. While I share your budget restrictions, I don't have a Terry - at least not one that works for free. If I had the budget (or a Terry) I just might completely redo my cozy little condo using your everything-white style. It always looks fresh and sparkling.

Wishing you a speedy knee recovery, a quick sale and finding another tired, flat-personality house to turn into a fabulous Junk Chic Cottage III. Looking forward to taking the transformation journey with you as you spread your magic.

    1. Thanks Glenda. I am so lucky to have Terry and his arsenal of tools. That helps when you have to do everything yourselves for sure. I could not have afforded to hire out all this work. So that made this easy to do in that respect. Him home too helped give us lots of time to get this all done quickly. Next house might be a longer transition with him working now. We will see. Just excited to be moving on to the next chapter in life. The last two years were a struggle for us so this is feeling so much better even with having to move eventually. Have a great new week.

  36. I've seen this entire transformation from start to finish, but it was so neat seeing it all again! the "befores" and "afters" really tell the story! Nice place before... AWESOME cottage now! What paint did you use to paint all of your cabinets? I'm sure you've probably said, but am lazy and don't want to go through all the posts again! Was it chalk paint? or did you use the Behr and primer first? I need to know as want to paint ALL of my cabinets and kitchen cupboards white! I really really do. Have planned it since I moved to this new-old house a year and a half ago. I'm so sorry you hurt your knee.. that sucks so much. I just finished gimping around for 6 months with my injured knee when I fell on it the end of July, and now going to physical therapy to try to get it back working "normal" again.. .got stiff from the inactivity and not using it. I hope we can at least watch your fun search for your next cottage.. that is so much fun... looking for a new nest to call home. I feel that anywhere we can surround ourselves with all of our beloved "things"... is home.

    1. Hi Marilyn,
I know exactly what you are saying about the knee. So frustrating. They did a steroid shot today and tonight I am not having any pain. He said the tear is not the problem it is the arthritis that is causing the pain. Only on the one side of the knee which I think is weird. So we are trying conservative route and if this works then I will be good. If not we will move onto another kind of shot that puts gel in the knee that keeps the bone on bone arthritis from rubbing and make it painful. He thinks with just having the one spot of arthritis and tear that the conserveative route will work for me. I am keeping hopeful just happy no surgery for now. Got too much on my plate to be down with this knee. Sorry you had such a hard time with your injury. Like I said getting older is not for sissies. What the heck is happening that my body is not being my friend anymore lol!

To answer your question on the paint we used a special cabinet paint I got at Lowe's. It has the degreaser, primer and paint all in one can. It was so easy to use. You do not have to sand or anything. Just clean down your cabinet real well and paint way. It took two coats of paint for ours with all the poly on them but it worked great and I just have to use a sponge to clean them off. So I would highly recommend this cabinet paint from Lowes. It is pricey at 49 a can but I did my whole kitchen two coats with one can. So when you add up the cost and time of sanding, degreaser, primer and paint I think the $49 is a good deal. Hope that helps.

      Have a great week ahead.
      Kris

    2. Thank you for the info Kris on the paint. I will make a note of that. One more question... what color did you use? just white? Yes getting old(er) is not for the weak at heart.... I hate it! My mind can't figure out why my body won't keep up... have to learn new ways of doing things. But boy sure is hard to function when you can't walk or can't bend your knee, like to get down on the floor to reach under something, etc. I'm glad I can do that again! Take care of yourself! 38. Wow you have been a very busy lady for the last 9 months! You have done a great job transforming your home into a cottage theme. Your hubby's area is great too. So sorry you tore your miniscus- I know some people can get by with no surgery and some can't. I hope you aren't in too much pain. Take care.

  39. I'm so sorry about your knee, Kris! You must take very good care of yourself and let it heal properly. I'm convinced that sometimes these things happen because God knows we need some time off. You have busy days ahead so give yourself permission to enjoy things you can do more quietly now.

But gracious, I'm glad you put the effort into this post. Seeing the before pictures with the after, all together here, boggles the mind--unbelievable but truly inspirational. You have surely given the new buyers a beautiful slate to begin with. And somewhere out there is another house that has no idea how lucky it's going to be.

  41. Sweetest Kris,
Woah I miss a few posts and wow! I can't even imagine life for you right now, what a time for a bad knee. That gorgeous house of yours will go quick...real quick! My husband and I are Michiganders and when he finished up in the Navy we moved back home and we bought our forever home and restored it. Sadly his job transferred us to Atlanta and our kids were all still in school so it really sucked! That was 3 yrs ago. I miss the snow and those changing leaves in the fall. Thankful God has carefully led us down our path though we are almost 50 so the job market can be frightening just happy we were relocated and not pink slipped! I am so happy that you are going to be driving distance from the kids. A grandma babysitting the little ones are memories that they will forever cherish I remember being 5 learning to sew a button and things like that. Wish my grandma had all of the cool treasures you have. So grateful prayers are answered for you and Terry. Take care of that knee! Kindest Regards, Rachelle

So I will make the effort to sell and move again. Life can really throw us twists sometimes. I have learned a lot in these past two years that you have to see the real blessing in life and cherish them. I grew up in Michigan. It is a fabulous state I am sure you do miss it.

  48. Kris, I read in you reply to Marilyn that you were given a steroid injection for your knee. I'm praying that will do the trick, my friend. Knees are so critical to staying active. You're right about the challenges that come with getting older, but we must carry on! We must. We must, I say! LOL It was so amazing to see your before and after photos of Junk Chic Cottage II. You certainly have the touch. Your home is charming, as will be the next one you find. You will always create beauty wherever you go. Oh, and I have to mention your outdoor spaces. Simply gorgeous. 62. Kris, you have completed another amazing transformation of the cottage dwelling, both inside and out. Wishing you all the best for a speedy sale. It seems the timing is perfect as we head into spring. I know you'll be out of pocket for all the work involved, but we'll still be here, awaiting Junk Chic Cottage #3. ♥
