Easy Shiplap and Cornices

Hi Everyone.

Thought I would show you the cornices done and hung up in the new house along with some fun shiplap I found to fill in the ugly walls space we found behind the kitchen cabinets that were taken down.
Here is the cornices Terry made before we painted and hung them at the new house.

The cornices on the large window and the smaller window.

We just painted over the paintable wallpaper with white paint.  I like the vintage pattern to this paintable wallpaper instead of just a plain boxed wood.

This is the pattern to the curtains I hung under the cornices.  It is pretty but I am going to be adding color to these windows in the form of cottage type drapes.  I want a real cottage feel to this sweet house so I am on the hunt for cottage drapes to bring in some color with all my whites.

I found a box of this peel and stick "shiplap" at Lowes.  It looks and feels like wood planks.  This one is called sea washed.  Here is the link for the shiplap peel and stick.

When took down the kitchen cabinets to put open shelves we found years of different wall textures behind the cabinets.  So instead of trying to sand plaster walls to get it smooth enough for paint we thought a shiplap look would be a great choice.

I have to say this stuff is easy peasy to hang.  It is peel and stick.  Terry nailed it to the wall too.  These planks covered up the rough spots and looks really nice.  I will hang my vintage open shelves in this area.

We also hung it under the soffit.

I will be excited to get all my chippy cottage kitchen decor out of storage and start to decorate this kitchen when all the renovations are done.

We are still waiting on the new sink.  The old one was awesome but it had a hug crack in it and was leaking.  Ugh!  So to find a sink to fit this space we had to order it.  It was not a stock item.   We will put in the butcher block counters and stain and food seal those too.  I want to do something cute with that window over the sink too.

I hope to have a kitchen reveal soon.  There have been a lot of delays for us.
We also had to order the skinny cabinets that will fit around the moved refrigerator.  You know so we can actually open the refrigerator door without it hitting the wall!!!!
So when the cabinets and sink come in this week we can hopefully take care of making the moved refrigerator work better and start to put some finishing touches to this kitchen.

So stay with me.  I will have final reveals I promise.  All my decor is still packed away until we get the garage build done and can officially move in.
Patience is the name of the game and I am running on low with it all!  I will be so excited to get the news we can move forward and begin after the permits get released hopefully this week.

Seriously trying to stay positive and patient.

Have a great rest of this beautiful summer week.
Still really missing this sweet boy.  It is a little over a month since Cooper crossed over the rainbow bridge.  I miss him so much.

On a lighter and happier note.  This sweet little one is turning one year old tomorrow. Happy Birthday  Charlotte.  Can't believe it has been a whole year since this sweet angel arrived into our family.

We will be celebrating her birthday this coming weekend.  Charlotte loves Minnie Mouse so we are having a Minnie Mouse theme party.  Should be lots of fun.

Have a great rest of the week.
Hugs to all of you.

  5. First of all, a very happy birthday to Miss Charlotte! She's adorable. I can't believe it's been a whole year either! Awww.
And sweet Cooper! :( hugs to you. I know how much it hurts.
That shiplap! What a beautiful color. It looks wonderful. Your kitchen is going to look fantastic! I love the wallpaper on the cornices too. It gives it a nice subtle touch. Goodness! I'd be pulling my hair out in frustration over the permits. How annoying. Hope they come through this week!

    1. The wallpaper is from Menards but I have seen it at Home Depot too. The white curtains are Laura Ashley and I got them at HomeGoods. Hope that helps.

  7. Kris, Love the cornices. Oh yes, that paintable paper is way nicer that plain wood. I love that Shiplap . Glad Terry nailed it on also....he's no amateur, is he? :):) The moisture and temp changes in kitchen could weaken the sticky backs of the planks. I like they way you work together. Look at that sweet faced baby girl. Happy birthday to Charlotte. Blessings to all, xoxo, Susie
P.S. I know you miss your sweet dogs, hugs honey.

  8. So much to comment on, but first let me say I miss Cooper too :(. Seeing his pics and hearing about his antics always lifted my spirits. I so wish dogs would live longer, but I suppose if they did there would be so many more in shelters because their owners passed and no one is left to take care of them. Makes me so very sad.

I am so in love with that shiplap, It has me thinking how I can use it in our new place (if we ever get there!). I absolutely adore all your choices...the curtains, the butcher block...everything is lovely and so you.

    Happy Birthday to gorgeous Charlotte!

  9. Kris, you have a lot going on! First, Happy Birthday to Miss Charlotte! Such a sweet face...kiss her all over. The shiplap is a brilliant idea for a rough wall. You know we are all waiting to see the finished product, but no more so than you and Terry. Cooper was such a sweetie...maybe when you are settled, would a new pup complete your home? The cornices look fabulous! Yes, could we have the source for the pretty white curtains? I need to replace our bedroom curtains. When you are finally able to dive into the boxes of decor, it will be like Christmas all over again. xoxo

  10. Miss Charlotte is a sweet one! I can imagine how much you miss Cooper. Love the cornices and the ship lap. I so understand trying to be patient! Last November when I announced we were building a house, I expected to be in it by the end of April. Now it is the end of June and we still have a month or two to go.

  11. Kris, this kitchen is really looking so beautiful! I love that shiplap and Terry's foresight to nailing it....just to make sure, especially when you put shelving on it. The cornices in the bedroom look dreamy. It always amazes me the way you two put your heads together and are able to use what you have (the wallpaper), and then create new things over and over again, often with repurposed pieces.
Haven't seen Charlotte in a long time - what a beautiful baby (and mama!), and she looks very happy! Maybe after all is settled inside, you'll be open to getting another fur baby to warm your cottage.
Hugs for great work, and hugs for perseverance and patience. Hope your mom is doing ok too.

    1. Nope it is textured like wood so it looks and feels like wood. Love this stuff.

  13. The cornices look great but I hadn't expected anything less, Kris. Whatever Terry builds turns out perfectly. You plan to add some color to the bedroom windows. Will it be egg shell, ivory or oatmeal, lol? I love the shiplap in the kitchen. It's a shame that there are so many delays. Hopefully you can make some progress this week. I can't believe that sweet Charlotte is already one year old. Time flies by indeed. Happy Birthday to her. I'm sad with you about Cooper. He was such a sweet boy with a great personality.
    Hugs,
    Julia

  14. Beautiful cornices Kris. The edition of the textured wall paper is a grand idea. We are in a holding pattern as we await the long countertop for the sink area. Ugh! Not til next weekend.
Douglas and I looked at those peel and stick wooden planks and were trying to find an excuse to use them hahaha. Luv what you did.
    Big hugs!

  15. Hi Kris, Happy Birthday to sweet Charlotte! I can't believe it has been a whole year she is so darn cute and with such chunky kissable cheeks! lol I just love little ones they are just a bright site. Your cornices turned out great. This little cottage is going to be so adorable. I can't wait to see what kind of color that you sneak into your white theme. Who knew that there was stick and peel shiplap. How amazing is that? It looks so great around the window. Love it! Hang in there the permits will come and it will in the time that is right for you. Have a awesome week sweet friend.

  16. Watching the evolution of your new home. I adore your blog. I never commented, just admired from afar. :) We just moved into a new home & I am trying to find that PERFECT light grey for our home. I want it light & airy. Do you mind telling me the color in your kitchen you used? Is it the same as in your living area? Also... that shiplap stick & peel... amazing!! Do you think it could go in a shower to cover up existing standard bath/shower kit? Love it! Can you share the brand please too.

    1. The color of paint in the kitchen is called Gentle Rain by Behr. It is in the white family with hint of gray. Not sure if you could use the shiplap in a bathroom. If you nail it and not just do the peel and stick it might work. Just thinking the peel and stick with the steam would pull it away from the wall. If you nail it like we did it might just work. Hope that helps.
      Have a great week.
      Kris

    2. One other question... why did your hubby nail it too? I'm hearing mixed reviews on this shiplap in my research in that it doesn't truly stick and nails may be required. Is this what happened with you guys? I just hate to add holes to my wall. Love any feedback. Thanks!

      Delete
    3. Hi
We nailed it because of it being in the kitchen and on a very rough wall with years of layers of thick plaster issues. With it being in the kitchen and cooking etc we nailed it to really secure it. It is tiny finishing nails so it does not put big holes in the walls. Hope that helps. Good luck.
      Kris
