Nope!!! When we got home that night they were all three still laying on the patio crying for their mother. It was now 8:30 at night on a Sunday. I called a local emergency vet to see what to do. They said if the mother did not come back by now they were most likely abandoned. They said to pick them up and put them in a box with a heating pad and fluffy towel or blanket and then call a wild life sanctuary in the morning.
All night long I got up every few hours to turn back on the heating pad since there is a safety built in to shut off after a certain time. They cried all night long for their mother. On top of missing their mother these poor little things had not eaten. The ER Vet said do not give them food or water just keep them warm until morning.
Morning came and the littlest one did not make it. The other two were still moving around and crying.
I called a few wild life sanctuaries to see who would take them. One place about an hour away said they would take them and to send them a picture.
I sent them a picture and the women got right back to me and said those are not baby squirrels they are minks. What?!!!! I did not know we have minks around here. Apparently since we have wetlands behind the woods in our backyard water will attract minks. Normally minks will have their babies in nests near the water. Why these guys were up on my patio far from the water way was a mystery. The wild life person told me the mother must have felt safe to leave her babies near our porch. They did tell me something must have happened to the mother or she would have come back for them.
They are sable minks. The kind they use to make very expensive mink coats out of many years ago.
I drove an hour up to the wild life sanctuary and left them in good hands. They put the two in an incubator and put a bolus of fluid under their skin to hydrate them. They said later that day they would start with a special formula and begin the task of feeding them every few hours.
I called to see how they were doing and they said they are growing quickly and doing well.
I was so happy to hear that after trying so hard for 24 hours to keep them alive they were thriving.
I found out some interesting facts about babies found in the wild. They cannot have baby formula. It has to be mother's milk and if that is not available they give them a special formulated milk. People make the mistake of finding small baby animals and try to feed them baby formula which just kills them.
Also found out that it is an old wives tale that if you touch baby animals the mother will reject them. That is not true. We however used gloves when we picked these little mink babies up to put them in the box.
It was kinda interesting that these little babies were left on my porch on Mother's Day. I am glad we found them and I could keep them alive until we could have a sanctuary take them.
They were so cute and I wanted to keep them but apparently Minks are very aggressive animals and would never do well as a pet lol.
They will now live out their life in the sanctuary.
Wishing you a very nice weekend. Hugs, Kris |
You're amazing my friend!! You're saved these babies. Most people wouldn't drive an hour to give them a chance to thrive. You rock!!
ReplyDeleteAnd the flowers look beautiful. That basket on the bike is amazing
ReplyDeleteAmazing babies. I've never seen minks. Your flowers are looking gorgeous as usual. Judy Clark
ReplyDeleteYour flowers are beautiful. I can't wait to see all the roses fill in in the front. Thank you for saving those precious little babies. That was a wonderful story.
ReplyDeleteWow. What a mixed emotional story you have there. I was thinking they didn't look like squirrels but thinking we'll maybe I haven't seen squirrels this young.. :0) Thank you for rescuing them. What a precious memory for yall and knowing they will be properly cared for in good hands... and others will enjoy seeing them. So sad their birth mom went away fir unknown reasons..:0( . I am thinking she knew your flower garden was a positive and safe area nearby. Great helping hands. Thank you for sharing. A good start to this June month.
ReplyDeleteWow, Kris! First, let me say ive missed gardener Kris and am happy you're back. Your flowers look amazing! Is that Vince beneath the bike basket? It's already so big! Beautiful blooms, all.
ReplyDeleteMinks!! That just blows my mind. What doesn't surprise me is that more of God's creatures have shown up to you & Terry. The caring energy you two provide so many could only go unnoticed by a brick wall.
Happy June!
First of all, I’m always quite envious of your beautiful flower baskets. I love how full and pretty they are. And I love your front flowerbed plantings. I hope they all grow and fill in quickly with the critters leaving them alone! Then, what a surprise to find mink babies! I wonder what happened to the mom. I’m glad you were able to rescue them. Sad the littlest one didn’t make it.
ReplyDeleteHugs, Cecilia
Lovely front gardens, Kris. Roses are so easy to care for. They love the sun and need water and food.
ReplyDeleteYour critter adventure is sweet. I do not know what I would do with such adorable tiny critters. I am thrilled you found a rescue that would raise them.
Baby minks! I bet you weren't expecting that. I am happy that two made it and they are getting the care they need. Your garden is so pretty, and I love the bike! I know it makes you and all your friends, family, and neighbors smile. You always create the prettiest and most welcoming outdoor spaces. It's fun to see what you've planted out front! Have a Blessed Sunday!
ReplyDeleteWow Kris, your flowers look amazing! Love the hanging baskets plus the bike's basket full of lovely blooms. How sweet you rescued those darling minks. So sad one died and the mother never returned. How special they showed up on Mother's Day. You are such an angel to care for them and them to a safe place where they can thrive. Hugs
ReplyDeleteKris, your garden is coming along beautifully! I can’t wait to see how it all fills in. I am amazed at the sable minks, I didn’t think they looked like baby squirrels. The mother mink could not have left them at a better place to be cared for. You are wonderful people , Kris and Terry!
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Pam
What an amazing experience to have. I didn’t think they looked like baby squirrels though! So happy you were able to save two and get them to the best place to give them a good start. God bless you both. Your flowers are beautiful! Margy in KY
ReplyDeleteHi, the story about the baby mink is just amazing. Whatever happened to the mother, we do not know, but what we do know is she knew just who to leave her babies with.
ReplyDeleteI love the flowers. The color combos are fantastic.
Love, Carla
Wow. Did that momma mink know that the house of a RN and Fireman would be a safe place? She must have gotten spooked off by something. I would have never guessed minks either. So glad you were able to save them.
ReplyDeleteLovely garden Kris... your green thumb is showing! Glad to see "Gardener Kris" back as one of the other followers said! Love your little porch area with the white chairs.. I have white old wood ones that need painting. Hope to do that in our next 10 days of sunshine here. The little minks story is quite amazing too. Who would thought they were minks. I grew up not too far from a mink farm, and always felt sorry for them as knew they were being "grown" for the fur coats. How appropriate that they were left at your caring home on Mothers' Day! I too wonder what happened to the mother. So sad, but glad you found a place who would take them and raise them there. Maybe you can go back in time, to see what they've grown into! have a wonderful week! Marilyn
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you found baby minks of all creatures right on your patio...and on Mother's Day, to boot! I think mama mink knew exactly who to leave her babies with (for whatever reason). Was it Flint Creek Wildlife that you called & went to? A few years ago, I found a newborn baby possum on my patio and that's who I called and brought the baby to. I also had to do the same thing you did - keep it warm in a towel in a box, with a heating pad underneath it. I found mine during the day though, so I was able to bring it to the wildlife center within a few hours.
ReplyDeleteYour flower bed looks beautiful. It will fill out nicely this summer!
Oh my goodness Kris, what a loving, thoughtful, kind deed you did in keeping this baby minks alive and transporting them an hour away. I can understand why you care about how they’re thriving as you were attached. Thank you for all the information that you shared.
ReplyDeleteYour yard looks so pretty and your bicycle is such a focal point. I am envious of all your beautiful flowers. I had petunias and zinnias that were eaten already. I’ve had those Mexican bells that you have or maybe they are called million bells, in the past, and they were eaten, too. I really have a terrible time and end up wasting money!
Enjoy the beauty of all your flowers and happy June!
