Beginning Summer Flowers . Faux vs. Real

Have you seen how faux flowers are all over IG and FB.  People are replacing a lot of the real flowers with faux.  I decided with all the wild life deer, rabbits, squirrels etc. I would try to put in some faux flowers along with real ones this year.  Mix it up!!
Last year I had to plant a lot of full sun loving flowers that do not attract the bunnies or deer.  Well with the shade from the big tree and limited sunlight the critter proof flowers did not thrive like I would have loved them to do.  This year faux will be mixed  along with real.

This is my blue and yellow painted bike.  She is back out into the garden and I decided to plant faux yellow and white flowers around her.  Seriously you cannot tell these flowers are not real.

I was amazed at how real they look and feel.  They come in bundles with long stems that go right down into the ground. No shovels needed.  At the end of the season I can pull them up and pack them away for next year.

I bought mine on Amazon.  They were pretty inexpensive. They claim to be UV protected.  I hope this is true and they will hold up through summer.
I have a big issue with the large tree we have out front.  I get mostly shade and not a lot of sun except in the late afternoon when the sun is over the house.  It is good for partial sun plants but most of the flowers in our region need full sunshine.

I had a hard time last year with having only certain parts of the flower beds doing well.
Like I mentioned deer and bunnies do not like many of the full sun loving flowers.   They kept the deer from dining in my garden last year but the flowers did not thrive without enough sunshine.
This is my dilemma.  Full sun flowers do not do well but keep the critters away.

I am still working on getting the real flowers and the faux flowers done in the yard.  I hope to get them in soon and show you all of the yard.
As you can see in this sneak peek I have real petunia bags and some faux geraniums mixing together.

I hung two Laura Ashley shower curtains to frame the outside of my sliding door on the patio.  In a later post I will show you why I hung these curtains outside.
This is one of the real flower bags.  I hope these bags do as well as last year.  Lots of TLC and flower food I hope they will thrive as last year.

I am excited we are getting nice weather going into May to start our planting.

We had to have our front yard dug up where the water line comes into the house.   In order to have a new shut off valve replaced we had to have the city come out to shut off the water for a few hours.  That started a whole thing with the village employee showed up to shut off the water line and said he could not get down far enough so they were going to have to dig and do a bigger job out there to get to the shut off valve.
I tell ya nothing can ever just be normal for us.  It always has to have drama attached.
The plumber was able to do some of the plumbing needed but the new shut off valve will have to wait for another day.

The city did get down to the water line with digging up the yard.  Now we just have to get the plumber back to finish the work.  Yikes!!!!

Have a good week.
I will be back with another post soon on the yard all ready for summer.
Hope where you are the weather is nice and you are starting to see the beauty summer coming to life.
Hugs,
Kris

  1. Wow! I thought the yellow and white petunias were a photo from last year with the real flowers! Those look amazing. My neighbor did faux pansies through winter and they looked great. I would be livid with the yard dig, and I fear that for reasons other than a valve shut off (they did that on the renovation). Our city pipes are over 100 years old and they're constantly tearing up streets and yards around here for either water or gas.main water lines break almost weekly in various sections of town.

  2. Kris, the flowers do look real. Faux flowers have come a long way looking so realistic. I did purchase some myself, because I have a squirrel problem. I also bought mine on Amazon.
Kudos to you for coming up with a solution. Hugs

  3. Wildlife always seems to present a challenge. Glad you found a solution. I’ll be curious to see how well your faux flowers hold up. They look real! We’re having pretty nice weather here at the farm. Wish it would stay like this through the summer but I know the heat is coming.
Ugh about your plumbing issues. Always something, right?
    Enjoy your lovely weather! 😊

  4. The flowers are super pretty and incredibly realistic. I am glad they offer this, because NO ONE enjoys looking at suffering gardens 😂 especially if you have unsightly bushes.
I should get some of these for the old house, before we put it on the market. Let me know if you have a particular link at Amazon! Kris, your yard looks so happy.
A funny side note: in our old neighborhood, we have a neighbor I do not know but they have a lot of dangly wind chimes or just decor hanging from a tree in the front yard and also one of those weird shiny balls..... then in the back yard (this is a corner lot so the back yard, though fenced) they have a small patio out the fully above ground basement
side double doors walk out, and also a deck, in the back of the house, up top at entry level. All of these areas around the patio, and up around the deck rails are completely lined up, with perhaps 500 large pots of flowers, year round. It looks beautiful and tacky at the same time. They have a big property only in the front, and those front gardens are not well kept. Even in the dead of winter, those flowers are bright and perky.

  5. Wow Kris, I love how pretty and real those flowers look. I was am so interested in getting some for my backyard. I do have a problem with the squirrels digging up my flowers and now I will try them out. It seems like it's always something when you own your own home. Good luck with your situation.

  6. Your flowers look GORGEOUS!!! No one would ever guess they are faux, especially with mixing them with real ones. I'm sorry they had to dig up your yard. It's always something isn't it?

  7. I had to chuckle, nothing is ever easy peasy for us either. Our dryer had an issue the other day, you would think that would be simple right? Nope. Got that fixed, then it was the washer!!! That took four times to get figured out. Ha!
We are two peas in a pod!

I like the way the faux flowers look. Keep us updated on how they do for you through the season.
I love the sneak peek of the curtains, I spy pink. :-)

  8. Those flowers look absolutely real, Kris! I love your bicycle placed amongst the pretty blooms, too. The bag of flowers is also beautiful. It’s so nice to have a mix of faux and real. I’m so sorry about the waterline and plumbing issues. There’s always something to deal with in a home, isn't there? Thank you for showing us how lively everything is looking so far. We’ve had chillier temperatures and dreary skies. Love and hugs, Kitty

  9. I woke up to snow this morning, Kris! Seriously?! It's like April Fool's Day in the wrong month. I have not done a single thing outside yet. I am going to look at some artificial flowers this year. I do love the real one but we have a herd of 15-18 deer that come through here every day. There is actually a path worn through our yard. They eat everything in sight---along with the bunnies! They have come a long way from years ago.
That's crazy about your water problem. You're like us---nothing is ever simple or easy. Valve not working? It's not the valve it's the whole water system. Gutters not flowing properly? Installed wrong and thus water has going down between the walls and causing mold. Yep---we are peas in a pod!
Have a great weekend, Kris- xo Diana

  10. Kris, the petunias look real. Thankfully we have had rain this week which will help our garden and new plantings tremendously. We have never had to water everyday in April like we have this year. Happy May!

  11. Well Kris - you really can't tell the difference between real and those faux flowers! It's a wonderful solution to your problem. Wishing you luck with getting the rest of the flowers sorted. I really feel for you regarding the water and plumbing problems - we had our shower room installed not so long ago and they didn't do a good job and we had to have someone else come and sort it out. Now there is a problem with the shower tray, so we'ver got to have that taken out and a new one put in. We will end up having to have the floor dug up - so I'm dreading that. Enjoy your beautiful weather. Gilly (UK)

  12. Kris, your yard looks so beautiful already! I can't tell the difference between the faux and real flowers. Love your bike! It IS hard to plant things that have mostly shade. I put some fushia bushes in last year that love shade, and they don't get much sun at all, and really thrived. Maybe try those? I don't know if the deer like them, but deer didn't bother mine. Although I live in a mobile home park, in the country, there IS a little herd of deer that walk through every now and then, and nibble on my flowers, even if right next to my home and in my back yard area. Last year, they demolished my beautiful yellow rose bush! I was so mad! They also ate most of my strawberrry plants and a little apple tree. I don't see them often, but they must sneak in during the night. I may have to put some sort of netting around everything. it'll be fun to see your yard all spruced up and done. it's going to be 90 degrees here today, and on the coast mind you! Kind of unusual for here, and just the one day! So I've watered everything really good. Take care... enjoy the summer months! xoxo Marilyn

  13. There is no way I'd ever know that those flowers are not real. Wow...faux have really come a long, long way!! My grandmother used to use fake flowers in her garden in the 70s but they weren't that realistic. Me and my brown thumb are heading over to Amazon right now to check them out! xoxo
