A retirement journey

Terry and I are beginning a new journey.  Terry's contract with the fire department will be ending this December.  Terry will officially be retiring after 50 years in the fire service.
We are hoping he will be renewed to work full or part time for two more years and then he will "really" be done working at age 70.
Right now it is not a sure thing to renew his contract for two more years.
If they do not then we want to move to our final retirement home.  That will be out of Illinois and to a more retirement friendly state.  We want to get out of the winters here to a more mild climate in the winter months.  Plus Illinois is third in the nation for the most expensive states to live.  We want to go where the climate is better, cost of living lower and lower crime rate and better way of life.

The three states we are looking are North Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama.
Each offers lower taxes, lower crime rates and better cost of living.
I will miss being so close to my daughters and grands but we would like to move and get settled while we are still young retirees and can live better and be able to really enjoy our retirement years.

We want to travel, Terry would love to be somewhere he can play golf almost year around.  I would love to have my garden and outdoor space almost year around.

Our journey will begin with North Carolina.
Next Saturday we leave for Charlotte North Carolina for a week.
We will stay in a cute Airbnb in Charlotte and branch out from there to explore possible retirement friendly towns.

One of the cities on our list is Asheville North Carolina.  This is where the beautiful Biltmore Estate is located.
Asheville is a city in western North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Asheville, NC, is celebrated for its unique blend of breathtaking Blue Ridge Mountain scenery, a vibrant arts scene, and a renowned "foodtopia" culinary culture

I have mapped out cities to visit.  Starting out from Charlotte to Huntersville then to surrounding retirement friendly towns like Concord, Matthews, Davidson, Cornelious and Morrisville.
All of these towns offer great affordability and quaint and historic downtown areas.  Cornelious offers the beautiful Lake Norman area.  North Carolina looks to be a beautiful state with beautiful scenery and history.  The best part is they have similar seasons to Illinois but with a nicer winter climate.

While we are looking for retirement options we can also take in a lot of what this beautiful state has to offer.

We will be exploring the quaint downtown areas along with the Smokey Mountain National Park, some of the beaches of the outer banks.

Edenton has a cute downtown area.  Edenton was voted the prettiest small historic town in the South.

Matthews has an historic downtown with many turn of the century historic buildings that have been protected.

We will be heading towards Greensboro which is surrounded by many beautiful towns.  One being High Point the furniture capital of the world.  High Point has many cute boutiques and a busy social district.  This picture is from Furniture Land which is a 1.3 million square foot furniture showroom.
Right near High point and Greensboro is Chapel Hill which is
the quintessential college town, Chapel Hill is the home of the University of North Carolina, but it’s more than just a center for academia. From sipping award-winning craft beer on a rooftop and digging into a legendary BLT to shopping at local boutiques.

Lake Norman in Cornelious and Davidson is 20 minutes from Charlotte.
Morrisville is another town near by that is known for a better housing market for retirees.
Greenville is in this area and is known as the Friendliest town in America.

If time allows we will be visiting
Raleigh Durham area.

We will see how much we can accomplish in a week.
This trip is more about finding out housing and culture for our possible retirement.

I am excited to visit as many of these towns and hopefully visit some of the cultural things to see and do.

I have been overwhelmed doing research and mapping out our journey.  I have had the help of friends that have family living in these areas and also many of you might know Shirley from Housepitality Designs on IG.  Terry and I are hoping to meet up with Shirley and her husband Tom if time allows.  Shirley has been very helpful with giving me information on some of the towns we are going to visit.

Have a wonderful week leading up to a special Mother's Day Weekend.  Happy Mother's Day to all of you wonderful women that take on the hardest and most fulfilling role of our lives.
Hugs,
Kris

When I return from our trip to North Carolina I will be doing a post on how my summer garden is coming along.

  1. Congratulations my dear friend!!! Oh I am so excited for you and please bring us along on your journey.
I will be excited to learn where you decide to live.
My uncle and aunt decided to retire to Texas, they became full time Texas residents long ago and love it.

  2. While we live in Omaha, our son and his family live in Matthews. We love visiting them, there is so much to do in Matthews, Charlotte and within an hour or two drive from there. The winter weather has been worse at times there than in Omaha recently, but the beauty is that the snow melts in a day or two. And a Wegman’s grocery store is being built in the area, too! You would love it there!

  3. Best of luck, Kris! I have two HS classmates who live in Davidson and Cornelius, respectively. The one in Favidson lives right on Lake Norman, has hosted us girls. The other just moved a couple years ago to Cornelius when they returned from living/working in Omaha NE. Our neighbor just moved to Outer Banks last fall. My sister's family vacations there every year.
One thing to consider of TN - no state income tax! Will went to school in Bristol, situated on the "Virginessee" state lines of TN and VA. Johnson City, Knoxville - he has classmates there.
Maybe try to meet with a realtor so they can ping you new listings!

  4. Oh my goodness, you will love NC! My daughter and son-in-law live in Winston-Salem. Asheville is a cool city too. I’ve been to several art conferences in Black Mountain which is close by. I’d love to live in that state. Get away from Texas’ brutal heat. Enjoy your trip!

  6. Staunton Virginia is nice. Good hospitals, small townish.
Tennessee is nice too, but they get too much rain!!
Ashville can be a bit too liberal for my tastes, also the property crime rate is high, but living close to Winston Salem might be nice My inlaws are from NC and retired in Morehead City, near the coast. Very very pretty area. It is good to start thinking about this. Perhaps the kids will come and visit more if you live near to beaches 😄

  7. Just something to keep in mind as you age is that you may have increased medical needs. That is what has happened with me and I am so grateful. I have large good health care nearby. Other family Members have moved to parts of our state to live near grandkids and they are having to drive 2 hours to get to standard medical care. That won't be too bad in a mild climate but might be something to keep in mind. It sounds like a lovely adventure and you're sure smart to check out the places before you move.

  8. So exciting. One thing I do know is South Carolina gets extremely humid Friends live there and that's the reason they pick South Carolina. I can't wait for you shared where you pick. Reeses is having issues.

  10. How exciting, Kris! My husband hopes to retire at 65 (in 3 years) and we've been having talks about when and where we want to retire to. North Carolina is definitely on the list! My sister and her family have lived in Winston-Salem for 40 years! She wouldn't change a thing. My husband went to Wake Forest Univ. there and he loved the area as well. My other sister has a place in the Outer Banks! I know the feeling of researching and planning these tripe (we're doing one on Memorial Day weekend) and I wish you guys the best. Can't wait to see where you land:) xo Kathleen

  11. Oh Kris, this sounds so exciting!!!!! What a fun adventure for you and Terry and how thoughtful to plan ahead. Rich and I dud gets to visit Asheville the year before he passed. North Carolina is so beautiful, and Tennessee is, too. I don’t know much about Alabama, except through blogging friends, but I’ll be happy to learn along the way either way you. What a wonderful way to plan your retirement I must say. God bless you and Terry on this journey. xo

  12. Kris - what exciting news! Get this done while you two can really enjoy it. John and I had planned so many things when he retired and then just months after he retired, he got sick. So make the most of it while you are still young. Those places will be fun places for your kids and grands to visit for sure. Hope you have a great trip this week and a very happy Mothers Day. Enjoy my friend. Judy Clark

  13. I can't help but speak up for Asheville as it was my birthplace and still home to cousins there. And then there are the wonderful Blue Ridge Mountains that are my earthly soul's home. I know you're familiar with it so hope it will rate high on your list but of course can't help speaking up for Tennessee also. I hope you both find exactly what you need!

  15. I thought for sure your latest home would be your final one! We have been looking all over for our "retirement home" for at least two years now. We can't find anything that fits our needs. We've looked in other places in IL, WI, MI and lately, MO. We've looked online in KY, TN and NC. The cost of living here in IL with such high property tax is nuts. However, this is where my elderly mother is, and our other close relatives. It's such a hard decision. I wish you the best of luck...let us know how you like NC! (I have cousins who've lived there "forever".)

    1. PS - Brian has several coworkers that have retired to various places in TN...they like it, but the housing prices there have skyrocketed since it's now a big destination state for retirees. It's also very hot and humid, but you guys might not mind that. No state tax! :-)

  16. Kris, I think this is fantastic and it sounds like a fun adventure! I have so many friends who have moved to North Carolina within the past few years. They're all like come on down, it's amazing! None of them would ever come back up north. They adore it and they really do live all over the state. I don't think you could make a bad choice, it's just going to be a matter of finding a town that feels most like home!! Of course, I do have friends in TN and Alabama who are also super happy about their new homes, too...so...tough choice. Can't wait to hear all about your travels and find out where you land!! xo

  19. Wow Kris.. you are ALWAYS full of surprises! How fun to go search the cute little towns you have on your list. I follow a couple on youtube who were sailing and living on a sailboat for a few years. Then she had a baby and they decided to get back to land! They chose North Carolina and bought land and are building a house there. They searched alot of places, including other states like Florida and South Carolina, and one other I think. They loved North Carolina so settled there. It sure looks like a beautiful state and lots of neat historic little towns. Have fun searching! I hope you find what you love! xoxoxo Marilyn
