Woooo Hard Post To Share!

Happy New Year.  I know a lot of us try to make those new year's resolutions with the hopes of achieving them.  Mine every year for the last 20 years has been weight loss.  This is something I have struggled with for a long time.

I had a hysterectomy at age 35 and went into immediate menopause.  Not good to start menopause at age 35!  I also have thyroid disease that has my metabolism down to zero.  So on top of not eating healthy and these health factors I have struggled with my weight for a long time.

I have tried every diet ever put out there.  I alway start the year out with eating better and starting back to the gym only to lose momentum after a few months.  Frustration of not losing anymore than 15 to 20 lbs at any one time with any diet and exercise, I was soooo frustrated.

Then this past year Terry and I decided to do something surgically for the weight loss.
I am going to share our stories with you but this by no means  is the best solution for everyone.  Everyone is different and has different issues and this should not be done lightly.

Here are some before pics of us.

Last Year at Disney in May 2015

Hard for me to look at these pictures of us.

Terry was weighing in at 300 lbs and I was at a whopping 268lbs.  Yep this 5'3" body was carrying around a lot of extra baggage!!!!! Wow this is the first time I could actually write those numbers down for everyone to see.

We then decided to have a procedure called Gastric Sleeve.  It is similar to Gastric bypass but not as radical.  You do not lose your whole stomach with gastric sleeve like you do with gastric bypass.  With still having your stomach just smaller you can absorb important nutrients and vitamins that need to be done in the stomach.  So in a nut shell they go in laparoscopically and remove a major part of your stomach and leave you with a thin banana size stomach.

So we under went 3 months of preparation. Diet counseling, psychological counseling, saw our regular doctor on a monthly basis before being allowed this surgery procedure.  They do prepare you physically and mentally for this surgery.

Terry had his surgery done October of last year and has lost 100 lbs and I had my surgery in May of last year and now have lost 68lbs and am still losing.

This is a picture taken right before Christmas a few weeks ago.  We are feeling better and healthy and finally after so many years of struggling with weight issues we are both at a better place.

Something finally worked for both of us and is continuing to work even months after the surgery.
I debated on sharing this on my blog since it is a very personal and very emotional journey for us.
Just thought maybe this might help someone that is struggling with health issues due to being over weight and they have tried all conventual diets and have not had success.

Being a nurse I know if I kept that weight on I was heading down a road to many health issues.  Diabetes, heart disease run in both sides of my family.
So this was the right decision for me.
Like I said this is not the answer for everyone but it was for us.    I do not endorse any surgeon or any of the companies out there that advertise for this type of weight loss.

We went with a safe and very experienced surgeon very renowned in this weight loss field before we made our choice to do this.
Just happy for the first time in many years to not have to make the resolution to try a new diet and exercise knowing deep down I will succeed for a little while only to struggle with gaining the weight back.

Even with this procedure you still have to exercise and make healthy food choices.  I still am a stress eater and crave the sugar when emotional.   This is not a easy fix to a big problem.  I still struggle with my weight but feel like for the first time I can actually keep going and get the weight off.

Now my New Year's resolution is to continue to exercise and eat better and continue on to my weight loss.  My weight loss is much slower than Terry's but Men are always the easy over achievers with weight loss!!!!  So I am being kind to myself and keep telling myself to be patient and keep moving forward.

My hope of sharing this personal journey of mine with all of you might just help someone out there that is struggling like I did.

Thank you for letting me share my weight loss journey with you.
Kris

  1. WOW, you guys look great! I think sharing your store will be very helpful to many. Yes, every year I make the resolution to eat better...I am now doing Zumba and while I haven't lost any weight, I do feel much better! Men do lose the weight quicker/easier than women. Keep up the good, hard work with your weight. I am MANY pounds overweight, so I do understand. Thank you for sharing your journey.
Happy New Year! It's going to be a great one for you!

  2. Thank you for sharing your story, Kris. I know it's a difficult thing to share things that are so personal. I, for one, am so happy when bloggers choose to share things about their life that don't necessarily fit into that "perfect" mold that so many bloggers only show. Good for you for taking that leap to get healthier!! I had weight loss surgery several years ago. I had a LAP band put in thinking that I was finished having children. I then got pregnant with my daughter and had the band drained. That was five and a half years ago and I never went back to the doctor again. I turn 49 next week and I've decided this needs to be the year that I take better control of my health. It's such an emotional thing for me. I have about 100 lbs. to loose but I can't think of the mountain that I need to climb. I have to focus on baby steps, one day at a time. Thank you for sharing!! God bless and have a happy and healthy new year with your family!! xoxo

    1. Wendy,
I did not mention it in my post but I tried Lap Band about 5 years ago and did not have any success with that so I decided the gastric sleeve would be a better solution. So far this has gotten me farther than anything else I have tried. Weight is a daily struggle for me but at least this has been the best solution I have found to work for me. Good luck as you find out what will be the best answer for you.

  4. Oh my gosh Kris - I am so happy for the two of you. Such an amazing transformation. I know how difficult it is to put the weight issue out there for all to see. I did it on my blog last May, and I broke out in a sweat, getting up the nerve to hit the publish button. I know you will be met with the same outpouring of love and support from your readers as I did! Keep up the hard work, but remember, you were a beautiful person before, during and after! Happy new year my dear! Jane

I saw your post too on your weight loss journey. I can really relate to the struggle of weight loss, goals and keeping the weight off if you can reach the goals. It will be a life long struggle for me just glad I finally found something that has gotten me farther than anything else I have tried. Thank you for your sweet visit and support.

  5. You look absolutely amazing and I'm so proud of you both! It's not easy to lose weight and it's one of the best feelings when you do. I lost a good chunk of weight a number of years ago through Weight Watchers and I have been great about keeping my weight down since...until this year. I am still not where I was but I'm not where I want to be, either. So...here I go again. Wishing you continued success in 2016!!

  10. What an inspiring post! I have been stopping and starting myself for many years. I am trying weight watchers now. My friend lost over 100 lbs in a year. I've been thinking of the gastric sleeve as well. I'll give WW another try before deciding on surgery. Your post gives me hope!

    1. Good Luck Debbie. Weight watchers is a good program. On the many diets I tried WW was one of the better ones that actually does work for most. I am glad you are giving WW another try. I would recommend gastric sleeve to anyone in a heart beat based on what it has done for me with that said I think everyone should try other non invasive measures first. I wish you much luck.

If it's a choice that made you feel right, and with the research you put into it (and knowing you are a nurse certainly helps), I think it was a good decision. Menopause at 35 is very rough. I had mine at 42 and I still struggle. You both look wonderful and still, I thought you were such a pretty lady when I met you 2 years ago. You look wonderful and healthy now and that makes it all the better. I know you are as beautiful inside as you are outside...but now you glow in happiness. Yay!!!

  30. Congrats on losing so much weight and choosing to improve your health! Y'all both look great! I have Graves' disease but that causes you to lose weight not gain. To treat it I had to take a pill that destroys part of my thyroid. Now I have to take medicine the rest of my life to regulate it. It doesn't cause me weight issues anymore though. My health issue is inflammation. I may start a biologic medicine to keep it under control. My current meds aren't working well enough. I hope that you and Terry continue to see good results from your surgery. I know that must've been a big decision to have that done. Here's to a healthier 2016 to both of us!!

  53. Hi Kris, thank you so much for sharing your story. Weight loss is such a personal problem and so many of us are embarrassed by it so we shut up and try to deal with it on our own. It is so wonderful to see that you and Terry can go through this together and to be able to cheer each other on. You have been through so much this last year that I know that this year you will be flying high with much successes. When I had my back surgery and went through my divorce (and other health problems that I dealt with) I was over 300 pounds, being that I am tall 5' 8" I thought that I could get away with it. But my frame is medium and my joints and muscles said I hate this, so pain became a huge factor. I had so much stress going on in my life that it lead to binge eating. Since that time I have lost 150 pounds and need to lose 30 more to feel good about myself. Exercise is my big problem right now but I will get it off this year, and get back to my original 130 pds. Thank you for sharing this and I know that you will succeed with your goal. Your pictures are beautiful and you and Terry look so sparkly! You are my hero. Luv ya, Jo

  54. You both look great, Kris, gorgeous!! I think that it's wonderful that you shares your experience. This world is full of so many common issues, that when someone finds a solution that works for them, it's great to hear and helps many. I think that's why the blogs are so popular. We all have kitchens, bathroom and bedrooms that need decorating. Perhaps, some of us have dishwashers that we don't like, so when we see someone who has found a creative fix, we are so happy that they shared their idea. ;) I think that health is no different and obviously so much more important. I wish you continued good health and success on your journey. Hugs!

  57. OMG, congratulations to you and Terry. I am so proud of you both. Keep up the good work, you will have more energy and feel so much better.
I have been on the Atkins Diet and have lost about 50 lbs and feel so much better. I no longer have to take medication for diabetics and my kidneys are working better also. Have my cholesterol and trig under control. I still want to lose another 20 lbs and have been on every diet that you can think of and only to gain it back.
I feel so much better taking the carbs out of my diet. So I know exactly how you feel. You and Terry look terrific.
    Keep up the good work.
    Hugs
    Mary

  59. WOW!

I didn't know what you were going through physically. On top of selling the house and a probable move, it must be incredibly challenging.

You and Terry both look great and I wish you well with your continued loss.

And now my soap box. Why do men just think the word diet and lose 15 pounds!!! It just isn't fair.

  69. You're very brave to have gone through this surgery, and even braver for hitting 'publish', but I'm so glad you did. You've probably helped more people than you realize, and that's what it's all about, isn't it?

You both look amazing, and more importantly, are healthier and feel better. Congratulations to you both.

One question...you said you both had it last year. Was that 2015 or 2014?

Forgive my lack of visits. The Internet is very, very unreliable here, even though we paid extra for a hot spot. I will try to be back and comment as much as possible. In the meantime, hugs to you both!

  78. Congrats Kris on a healthier happier life. You look great, and I'm sure you will continue. I have managed to not gain much back from my health issues from last summer, but I know it is a slippery slope and winter months, make it more difficult. Wishing you both the best in the NEW YEAR!. 79. You know I am not visiting blogs right now but I saw this pop up and had to read/comment. I am SO SO SO proud of both you and Terry. You did the right thing for YOU! You are both on the path to long-term good health and will be around to watch little Abby grow up and get married or do whatever she is going to do as an adult someday.
I know there are naysayers that say it is all about willpower and making good choices but the people that say that don't really have any concept of the struggle that some people go through. Most of the people I know that struggle with this are some of the strongest people I know that can do just about anything--except control their weight on a long term basis. Been there-done that so I know firsthand how hard it is.

Kris, I think you may have given hope to a lot of people that struggle with weight that think they are doomed to be overweight and unhappy forever. There is more than one way to lose weight and this is one of them. It is the plan that is working for you. By the way, did I forget to tell you that you look GORGEOUS? You already look way younger than your age and you look even younger now.
And that ol' Terry boy ain't bad either! lol Love you guys! Diana

  82. Wow, Kris, what an inspiring and brave post! I so admire your honesty and I know how hard it must have been to hit publish on this one. It is great to see how much positive feedback you have received in these comments. I see a beautiful couple in both your before and after pictures. I am so happy to hear about the amazing results that you have both worked so hard to achieve. Congrats!! 2016 is looking like an amazing year for you.

  83. Kris, thank you so much for sharing your weight loss journey. You both look fantastic in the Christmas photos. My dental hygienist had the same surgery done for her weight loss and she looks and feels fantastic. I struggle with my weight also. I am addicted to carbs and sugar and am an emotional eater so I can really relate to your issues. I've tried so many different diets to lose weight. I find that when I exercise I automatically eat a little better. So back to the local gym for me to try to get back on track. I applaud you both for doing what you needed to do to get healthier.
