Kitchen Reveal Work in Progress

Before kitchen
Very old dark cracking and falling apart cabinets, old appliances that did not work.  Kitchen counters that were formica and dark and stained.  Ceramic floors that were cracked in many places.  Very dated ceiling fan.

After kitchen.  Again very hard to get good pictures in this kitchen with no natural light or window.  New butcher block counters.  New cabinet doors.  Refrigerator moved and new cabinet added and microwave.  All new appliances.  Planked floor.

I know a lot of people love ceiling fans in the kitchen.  Me not so much.  I think they just grab the dirt and grease.  However with saying that we found that we needed air movement in this kitchen so the fan was a must.  I found this light fixture that has the fans built into the light fixture so they do not collect dust.  They push the air around and there is no sound.  I love the quiet of this light/fan fixture.  Plus it is dimmable and has a remote.

Other side of the kitchen.  Upper cabinets removed and that 30 year old double oven removed.  Open cabinet and lower cabinet on left side of stove removed to add the washer and dryer.  That cabinet on the bottom looks big and deep.  NOPE!  it had all the plumbing hook ups for the washer and dryer in that cabinet so there was no storage.  She did not have a in unit washer and dryer and used the ones in the basement.  I wanted an in unit washer and dryer.

The walls were a mess so we found these ceiling tiles at Home Depot and used them on the walls.  Easy peasy to install and completely washable.

The new washer and dryer are in and a new cabinet put in between the stove and washer and dryer for storage.  Upper cabinets that were removed the small open shelves were added.  I need to find some new treasures to decorate the shelves.

This is the kitchen so far.  I am figuring out what to do with the upper soffits in the kitchen above the cabinets.  I have a few ideas for that space and when done will show you that.  Since we just moved in a month ago everything is a work in progress.

Happy Monday
Have a wonderful week.
Hugs,
Kris

  1. I love, love, love what you have done to that kitchen. The touch of red is beautiful and the tin backsplash is perfect. I have seen that fan on another blog and love it. Could you tell me where you got it or the name of it? I would love to put one like that in out next home.

  3. Wowee, Kris! I came over here to see if you had anything to report on the tornado in the Chicago - wth??! I know it was northeast of you, very glad for that. Now, this kitchen. Girl, you and Terry simply amaze me with what you do. And the soffits....do you mean decorating them or are you planning to remove them? With you, one can never tell! It looks great.

  4. It's gorgeous, Kris. Love that fan, it's the first of something I've seen like this. You know you're terribly in style as the British have their washer and dryers in the kitchen! You two have totally transformed that space!

  5. Wow!!! Kris, this makeover is sooo amazing. Can I hire you to re-do my kitchen?! How do you like the quality of your new cabinet doors?

I am one of those who loves having a ceiling fan in my kitchen. Our kitchen is an eat-in one and it is always a natural gathering space for anyone who visits. So it's nice to sit in the kitchen with the fan going. Plus, I do a lot of cooking and in the summer it gets hot, even with the AC on. I have never had a problem with the ceiling fan attracting grease. As far as dust, no big deal at all. It doesn't get that bad. I maybe dust it twice/month.

I had never seen the kind of ceiling fan you have - that is so cool!

  6. What a beautiful difference, Kris! And it's even a different style from your other kitchens and totally works here. I love the ceiling tiles you used on your walls. Would you mind sharing details on the ceiling light/fan? I need a little air movement in my kitchen and yet kept putting off getting a ceiling fan. I love your light fixture fan! Countertops are really pretty!

    1. Hi Dewena,

I got that ceiling light/fan from Home Depot.  It works so great and is so quiet.  The only thing I will tell you is it came with 5 light bulbs that lite up the entire condo lol.  So we just put in two of the light bulbs and that was the perfect amount of light.  You do not see that bulbs are missing so it is all good.  Hope that helps.  xoxo Kris

  7. Looks fabulous. Just a question. Why does the grain on the butcher block counters go in different directions? i am considering them for my kitchen. Is this how they are always installed?

    1. Just the one piece between the stove and washer is one way different than the rest. We did that on purpose so we would not have to buy another full piece. The last piece we had fit the other way perfect. So we saved about $400.

  8. I didn't know they made such a thing as that fan. It certainly is pretty. I love the white cabinets and butcher block. I think butcher block makes it warm and cozy. I'll take it every time.

  11. Man you and your husband work fast! I can't believe it's only been a month and you've done that much! It looks beautiful as I knew it would. I liked the way you moved the fridge. It was awkward in it's original place, plus you gained more counter and cabinet space. I love, love, love that light/fan fixture. Beauty and function. Nice job!

  12. Well....what a transformation! It all looks amazing Kris and you and Terry have done such a lot, in a small space of time. I love all of it, but I have to say that my favourite piece is the Jug/lamp. It's so beautiful and different. Looking forward to seeing what new treasures you find for those cute shelves. 1. Hi Margy,

Those are just ceiling tiles sheets I got at Menards.  They work great and are pretty good size and fit together nicely.  Very light weight and easy to hang.  I used small white nails to attach them to the wall. They have several styles.  They are actually supposed to be for your ceiling but they work great on the wall.  Here is a link.  Menards has lots of designs.

  21. Wow, what a difference! I love your backsplash and I MUST have that ceiling fan for two rooms in our house. We have the same appliances except you have the range that I wish we would have chosen. I don't blame you for wanting an insuite washer and dryer, I would have done the same. They look great in your kitchen. Wonderful makeover by the Dynamic DIY Duo! xo

Love the piece on the wall too holding your wooden spoons!

  23. You and Terry did an amazing job with the kitchen makeover! I love this kitchen. It's great that you put the washer/dryer in the kitchen, instead of doing the laundry in the basement! I love the white tiles for the backsplash, the white cabinets, and how you moved the refrigerator over to get more counter space. Great job. I hope you both can have a relaxing summer Kris!

  31. I'm amazed at what you and Terry have accomplished in such a short time. We've been in our house 5-1/2 years and haven't done anything close to what you have done! Of course, our main deterrent is MONEY! and lack thereof.......you guys really rock. I'm dreaming about white cabinets.... maybe one day it will happen. I cannot do it myself physically. Nor can Hubby. You are SO SO fortunate to have a hubby who can do all those things! So glad you got the stacking washer and dryer in the kitchen. You will love it in the kitchen! Ours are in our kitchen, off in a little nook but close to the kitchen sink, and I just love the location and it's so easy to throw things in the washer from right there. There's a nice big window by it so can look outside while I do the wash! And I too love the pops of red. I see you have a little lamp on the counter which I love. It gives the kitchen a nice soft glow in the evening when all is done in there and it's quiet for the night. My mom always did that, so I finally made room for one on our counter! I hope you take some time to rest now! xoxoo Marilyn

I am fascinated by the stacking washer-dryer combo…what brand ar they? How do they work (are they able to handle blankets, comforters?)

Thank you for sharing you gorgeous house …and for providing such inspiration!

    1. Hi Nina,
Thank you for following my blog. I so appreciate you coming by. The stackables are Bosh 300 series. I did a lot of research and these work the best and had the best reviews especially since we cannot vent our dryers. I use the big ones in our basement for comforters or blankets but for everything else they work great. So far so good. Hope that helps. xoxo Kris

  33. Love the changes. That light fixture with fan is so cool. My ceiling is so low I can’t see it working but I’d love that vs. the ceiling fan. It looks all so fresh snd bright. Love, love, love it all. Great job!

  34. The kitchen turned out great, Kris. I love what you did. I am going to use those same ceiling tiles in the camper for the kitchen area walls. The ones I have are silver though-but-after seeing the white ones I might exchange the ones I have. I love that you were able to get a stack unit in your condo. How lucky that the plumbing, etc. were right there so you could do that. I hope you are loving your place and that it truly feels like home already. xo xo Diana

  37. WOW!! What an amazing transformation!!! I am glad you shared about the fan, I do not like ceiling fans as well, we have 4 of them to change out as we go from room to room doing updates.
We just ripped up our floor in our kitchen, it looks like we maybe able to use the original oak flooring that was under the sub floor.
I also like the tile idea, you have given me many ideas.
    Thank You,
    Carla

  38. The new cabinet doors are beautiful! Ceiling tiles are the perfect backsplash. The fan is my favorite thing in your new kitchen. It provides air circulation without the blades that catch every bit of dust and grease from cooking. Even if there is very little frying going on, there is still grease. It's good that you have access to larger machines for washing blankets, etc. It is all coming together beautifully! xoxo

    1. Hi Becky the appliance are from Lowes and they are Samsung. Hope that helps. They are not high end just middle of the road. I do not like the high end with all the bangs and whistles. They seem to be a nightmare when they do not work right. These came in a bundle where you can get all four appliances for a bundle price. Cheaper that way. xoxo

  44. Hi Kris, I’m just catching up after soooo long & crazy job change !! We downsized too & my hubby is still on the Fire Dept. HOW can I talk him into shelves over the stove ??? I don’t think we need a fan bc y’all aren’t the first I’ve seen without one! Heartbroke to see about Buddy too but just know he had THE BEST (and cutest home 🏡).
