New Counter Tops

These were my butcher block countertops.  I love butcher block countertops and have had them in my last two homes.

It is hard to see but for whatever reason these butcher block countertops are drying out more than normal in this condo.  Normally I would oil them about every 2 to 3 months.  Since we moved in and installed these I have had to do them about every two weeks.  They were drying out and staining and leaving water marks etc.

I would have to take everything off the counters and oil them down and let it sit overnight.  Then wipe off any oil that did not get absorbed into the wood.  This was becoming high maintenance to have to do this every couple of weeks.

This piece over between my washer and dryer and stove had to be installed in a funky way opposite the other counters because of the size of the cabinet.  That to me always seemed off.

My daughter took these butcher block pieces and her hubby is going to make her a nice large cutting board top for her island.

I always liked the look of marble but it is way too expensive.
I found a faux marble countertop in stock at Menards.
After measuring Terry figured out what pieces we would need.
Cost about $300 for the pieces.
I think you will be surprised at the look I got for $300.

I think the new counters make the kitchen look brighter.

It is a faux marble look.

This is the other corner in the kitchen.  Added a couple of more storage cabinets.  Debating on whether to change the top of this to the faux marble.  I like the white barnwood for now.

I added the little counter top lamps to bring in light at night.

My next little project is to find some cute fabric,  fabric flowers or lace to make these plain shades look a little cuter.  On the hunt for something to bring some bling to them.  I hung a cast iron bird feeder near the sink for a soap dish too.

Have a great Friday and Happy Weekend.
xoxo

  1. Morning Kris.
Love your new counter tops and it makes your backsplash look even classier. I am glad you got the faux marble look because my daughter has marble in her kitchen (it was there when she bought it) but it stains and leaves rings and she is not real happy with it. She even sealed it beforehand, but evidently you must have to seal it a lot. It looks fabulous and I am sure you must really be enjoying it.....
Nice your daughter can use the butcher block as well. Have a good weekend,
    Blessings, Nellie
Hope you guys are keeping warm..........

  7. Wow, Kris! $300...that's crazy. It looks like a much more expensive change. I would think that even faux marble would be more. It looks great. I also love the lamp and soap dish additions. It's always those little details that really take a room to the next level and I'm loving the whole look!! Have a super weekend and stay dry and warm! xo

  13. Dearest Kris, good morning!

You found yourself a wonderful product; we love Menards and sometimes they have much better finds than the two other leading competitors! This faux marble looks perfect and will probably wear much better than real marble, correct?

I sure miss you - I still need to show you my newly renovated bedroom. I still have to save up to get good bedding to even take any pictures to make public but it is pure white bliss!

Your kitchen is just as lovely as can be. The little lamps add some nice ambiance. xo Diana

  20. Hi Kris! Wow - your $300 countertops look like a million! Unfortunate that the butcher block didn't work out, but new tops are really beautiful. I love the charm lamp light brings to a kitchen. The bird feeder soap dish is a sweet addition as well. Jane

  26. OMG..Soooooooooo in love with your new countertops. Wow..You are so blessed to have your very talented handyguy/partner to work magic for your new home...you two are quite the Team..Hmmm..where is that HGTV Show.. ;0) .. I am in the market in the near future(hopefully) to redo countertops and definitely want white as I have had black mix ones for 17 years now..its time. I love the way all the pretty decor looks in your kitchen and know you will vamp up the lampshades, too. I really like the new cabinets with the shiplap, also..! I know your daughter was happy to get the recylcle wood, too, for their project. I hope you are able maybe one day when they get "aroundtoit" to share that with us..sounds great, too! (I am still waiting to get a lot of those aroundtoits myself, lol)...Take care and hope yall are staying warm toughing out "Old Man Winter".. x0x0 Thank you for sharing..always enjoy your posts.

  28. I love your new fax marble countertops. Your kitchen looks so elegant. The sweet bird soap dish is darling. Why not have a Terry install LED under counter lighting. It can be added inexpensively and it also gives you more counter space. You can also add it at the top of the cabinets. Just a thought. Paul added ours and I absolutely love it. Xoxo

  29. Oh, my! Kris, I love the change. The countertops look fantastic, and they really do make your kitchen look much brighter. Wood countertops are nice, but they are a lot of work. I've had them in the past and much prefer my current countertops, which are along the same line as yours. Whenever people see my faux marble countertops, they think they are the real thing. I know you'll enjoy your new countertops for a long time. I also love all the accessories you've added to your kitchen. You always do the sweetest things, like the soap dish. Brilliant! Anyway, I love what you've done, and, as always, I come away from your posts inspired. Hugs and keep warm! P.S. $300 is crazy inexpensive!

  38. Ah Ha Kris I caught you with a pop of red in your kitchen! I love the "stove area" with the cute shelf above it.. the little towell with the red truck, and especially what is ON TOP OF YOUR STOVE!!! I'm hungry now.. love what's on that cute shelf.. the little birdhouse and tall pitchers.... and the lamps are darling. I love having a lamp on the kitchen counter... my mom always did and I grew up with that cozy look of the kitchen at night. The lamp was always left on all night. I'm sure you will recreate the shades to something darling. I have a shade in my craft room that needs an updo... so will see what you do to get some inspiration! Oh.. and the counters look great too! xoxo Marilyn

LOVE the new countertops! Such a lovely add to your kitchen. I like a little light at night in the kitchen too! My hubby found a terrific battery operated strip light for under my cabinet where our coffee station is. It gives us just the right light. At the cost of electrician per hour....battery light for the
