Open Shelves Kitchen

I took down one of my cabinets to make room for open shelves with some cool corbels that I have.

Took the shelf down.

Added plastic tile back to fill in where the cabinet was held.

Added the cabinet to the other side of the kitchen near the island to continue to have that cabinet for storage.

Ok this is where my sigh comes in.
I have to style these shelves and I just can't seem to find the pieces I want to make them shine.

How about you do you find it hard sometimes to find just the right decor pieces to make a great vignette?
I thought I would show you the open shelves even though I do not have my decor pieces to fill the shelves just yet.

I loved using the great corbels I had.  All white and chippy.  Then Terry made me some shelves out of an old drop leaf table.

The shelves open up my space and I love that.   I am on the hunt now to fill up these shelves with some cool pieces.

We are planning a trip to Michigan next month for my birthday and I hope just maybe I can find some things in the cool shops I frequent over there.

I am starting a small coffee bar too.  This is a work in progress.

There are my open shelves.
Not sure if I will keep both shelves up and try and find cool things to display or take the top shelf down and find a cool salvage piece to put above the shelf on the wall.
Time will tell with all of it.

Hope you have a great rest of the weekend.
Spring is trying to appear here in Illinois but darn Old Man Winter keeps holding on for dear life.

We have a few days of spring and then back to a short day or two of winter.  Hoping the tug of war between Spring and Winter will end soon.

Hugs,
Kris

  1. Looks gorgeous, Kris, and you answered my first question about how you are living without the space. Have you thought about displaying some antique or vintage glassware and plates... even something you might use on an everyday basis. I can just see some lovely crystal glassware and vintage white or small floral plates that would catch the light of your wonderful chandy. Have fun on your get away. It's back and forth here too as far as the weather. xoxo

  2. Love the open shelving! I agree with Debra ^...I think since you already have open shelves with decor items by the stove, perhaps some glassware and plates would look lovely on your new shelves. Hope you're having a good weekend!

  3. GOod morning Kris! A great friend of mine helped me out last night with my dining room dilemma; I too am struggling how to pull all the elements together that I have iin that room that on their own, are gorgeous but together, don't work. With your lovely new shelves, give yourself time to see what you would really love to have in that space: functional and pretty or just pretty...the shelves and corbels are gorgeous. Maybe add some texture and color with a small, vintage oil painting of flowers (unframed or framed in a simple gold frame) and see what happens.

  6. Kris!! I love the open shelves! They look great. You and Terry make such a creative team. I can't wait to see how the space evolves. I totally understand the challenge of the hunt and trying to find the right pieces to fit your vision and your style. I hope you find what you're looking for (I know you'll know it when you see it!) and that you enjoy the process!! I also hope that the Old Man Winter gives up the fight soon!! xxoo

  8. Beautiful! I love the open shelves. So clever to use a drop leaf table. . .the rounded edges soften the shelves, and work so well with those gorgeous corbels. Your plastic tile is very interesting. I love it! You'll find everything you need to decorate the shelves. You have to have the most romantic kitchen in all of decorland! So, so lovely. Have a God-blessed day, my friend. ♥

  9. You did it again! Great idea and great execution of the idea. You know I am willing to adopt Terry at any point in time. lol. I will send you John and you will have the pleasure of showing someone HOW to do things but then you will have to do it yourself anyway. lol

I love how this turned out. Great use of the table leaves for shelves. Perfect! You will find just the right pieces to fill the space. Hopefully, the perfect pieces will pop up when you are in MI for your birthday (if not before).

Have a wonderful week. xo Diana

    1. I hope you come back to read this since I do not know how to reach you any other way since you came in anonymous and not return email. Some of the shops are in Kalamazoo called Vintage Garden Market and in Portage right near there is Trove. then when you go up north of there a little bit is the Found Cottage in Hudsonville and down the street from is Rustic Treasure. There is a strip mall shop right past there with many vendors. Not sure of the name of it but people in the Found Cottage could tell you. Then in Grand Rapids is Rekindled Treasures and in Byron Center is Cottage Blue. All within 10 to 15 minutes of the Found Cottage. Hope that helps. Kris
