Roses are Red

Roses are red well... Maybe yellow and white and pink.
I am going to show you some of my roses I planted in place of some bushes we moved from the front of the house.

My sweet friend made me this cute garden wreath for my front door.  It was a birthday present for me in April.  She made it from things in her stash at home since we were all quarantined.  I think she did a great job working with things she had.  It means more to me that she hand made this with love.

On my front porch I have a chippy white chair with a flowering plant.  I am going to paint the porch and steps and sidewalk soon.  I did this in another home and it came out very nice.  You use garage floor paint.  I just think it will make the cement a little prettier.

I ordered this yellow mailbox to match my front door.

I found this little moss bird planter with a vine and flowering impatiens growing.  Thought this was really a cute planter.

I decided to plant some climbing roses on the arch to train them to grow and fill in this archway.

I had this bike basket in black from a long time ago.  I decided to paint it cream and chippy it a little bit for the garden gate.

I am hoping all the perennials I have added to the picket fence will take and love their new home.  I have to tell ya at 62 years old my knees and back let me know the planting of so many annuals each year are over!

If the climbers do well on the archway next year I will plant more climbers on the other side of this picket to grow along the top of the picket to add color and fragrance.

This is one of the David Austin Climbing Roses I found at my garden center.  I wanted pink but they were sold out early so I settled on yellow.

It is already beginning to grow up and lots of buds starting to open.  I will continue to train it to grow up and over the arch.  I put one on each side and hope they will meet up at the top of the arch.
This is where a big old ugly dead tree was taken down when we moved in last summer.  I made it into a space for the birds to have a little place to splash in the water.

I love to use old chippy chairs people have discarded back into my garden.

I put a climber on the porch post of this old birdhouse.  I hope it will take and I can train it to grow up and all around the birdhouse.

When we pulled out the old bushes from the front I planted hydrangeas and David Austin New Dawn roses.  The hosta was there and I left it.  Hoping this will all fill in nicely.

My peonies are very close to opening up.  I love when I see all kind of buds just waiting to spring open.

The New Dawn roses are already opening.  They are a very light yellow rose.  Very big blooms that are so fragrant.

Keeping positive all my perennials will start to fill in and love their new space for years to come.  If I can get the roses to do well I will add new varieties each year.  We are in the right zone for roses but sometimes it can be tricky to grow them here.
Flower boxes were filled with pink this year.
They are already spilling over early so that is a good sign they like the amount of sunshine they get out front.  In the midwest we do well with petunia's.  They grow easily.  The only issue with petunia's is the dead heading.  A lot of you have asked me how I get my flowers to grow so big.  They are the perfect flowers for our growing zone.  They have a great start at the garden center where I buy them and I feed them weekly with miracle grow and water daily.

This is the beginning of the flowers for the front yard.  I hope to show you all these flowers blooming and getting bigger in the future months.  Have a lovely Friday and wonderful weekend.

  1. We need a "WOW" button to click for your site. lol All so beautiful. Love the chair idea and also, I just love the large standing angel in your garden. Great job. I, too, have knee and back issues and try to plant only perennials now..with exception of one or two hanging baskets with annuals. Have a blessed and beautiful weekend getaway in your yard..WOW.

  3. I love how pretty the front of your house looks. It's nice that the weather is finally warm for the flowers to grow strong. The wreath is gorgeous and I love the chair and the bird bath. Have a happy Friday and weekend Kris.

  4. Your cottage is so pretty! I've made notes throughout the whole post. Our daughter has been gardening here--the sweet angel--and RH and I are again feeling pumped about improving the garden. We have front porch steps that need painting badly so when you do that, please give all the details!

Kris, when I see your garden pictures I think of a special garden I visited years ago when RH was working at their house. It was so lush and cottagey and I asked her how she did it and she told me she came home from nurseries and garden centers with as many perennials as she could afford and just put them everywhere. I can't resist pretty baskets but it is true that each year we want more and more to put our money in perennials.

I have a gardening daughter-in-law who would love that thatched roof hanging planter. Would you mind sharing where you got it?

  9. Beautiful, I love what you decided to do. I really do like the yellow roses. I am excited to see how the David Austin do for you. Have you tried David Austin's before? I have heard so much about his roses and how lovely they are.
    Happy Garden Season,

  10. Kris- It looks just gorgeous--which doesn't really surprise me a bit. Now you watch, the neighbors will all be starting to 'pretty up' their areas, too. I miss having a trellis to grow roses on---but thinking I can do something similar here with the entrance.

The roses and ALL your plants looks like they are doing beautifully. Was hoping I could play outside today a bit but I am doing the garage while it is cool enough to do it. Have a car full of stuff to drop off in 5 different locations...and then I am going to call it an early day---well...except for laundry....and cooking....you know that is neverending.
Anyway---so so so pretty. Love it- love you- Diana

  15. Oh Kris, beautiful and dreamy. I would have loved to plant roses but I can't take care of them. John does enough outside.

Your mailbox is so happy in yellow. I bought perennial geraniums for our front this year. They're small now but they'll look pretty.

Everything g us gorgeous as always.

  16. Kris!! Wowee!! You have truly outdone yourself with gardening at the cottage! Seriously, I am in awe of not only the work you've done, but how well put together your landscape plan is! I hope your roses do as well as they already seem to be doing. This is fantastic. It really looks so good. You need to be featured in a magazine, if not this year, then in your garden's second year for sure. I can't wait to see those rose climbers meet on the trellis arch. I hope it's this year! Two [green] thumbs up from me on this! Enjoy your weekend!

  17. Kris, you always have the most beautiful gardens. I called you the "Petunia Whisperer" this week, because I have never seen petunia baskets like yours. I'm hoping to get back to the nurseries soon to get more plants. Plants down here were just too sad and pathetic. I'm in love with that wonderful picket fence and gated arbor. Have a beautiful weekend!

  18. KRIS! YOu have done it again.

The house and gardens are transformed. You nailed it; this is what I wish so many people in my neighborhood with small cottages would do:

    1. Put up a picket fence or wings and/or an arbor
    2. Keep a neat, orderly garden of clipped perennials
    3. Create a theme

You have hit it out of the ballpark, AGAIN. Bravo!

  19. Oh wow! I love the flowerbeds! David Austin roses are some of my favorites as they are fragrant and pretty hardy. I have three roses too; two are antique rose varieties and the other a David Austin - it's peach colored with a lovely fragrance. My climber is a little red one. I have a trellis beside the studio window. I'm hoping it will grow a lot this year. It's so much fun to plant and watch things grow, isn't it? I look forward to seeing the progression of your already pretty spaces. May I add I'm jealous of your white picket fence and arbor? :) I always wanted one. Adorable and perfect for your little cottage!

  25. Your flowers always look so lush and beautiful! You have such a good eye for decor and that translates beautifully into your landscaping. Good luck with your roses. They are always gorgeous and usually fragrant but I am a poor rosarian. Did you plant any lilacs or peonies? The neighbors will up their gardening game after seeing all you have done. Enjoy your weekend. It is gorgeous here and will be for a few days. xoxo

  27. It all already looks so wonderful! That was kind of you to add something for the birds when you removed the tree. They will thank you for it. I NEVER get down on my knees. I roll around on my over 20 year old garden cart on wheels. You need to get one and spare your knees!

  30. Oh wow, Kris! It all looks amazing, the beautiful flowers and your uniques style of pretty chippy and unusual items to plant flowers in, and also to decorate around your garden. I love David Austen Roses, my Mum used to live very hear to them. We took her there, not only to buy roses, but also to look at their amazing garden area, which showed off their plants to perfection. I had to leave 2 of their roses in the garden of my cottage in Cornwall, when we left. Hugs, Gilly x

  31. Your yard is looking so pretty. The flowers are growing and some are spilling down beautifully. Love the addition of climbing roses on the arbor. I adore that look. The wreaths are so sweet. 33. Everything has a great start! Your yard looks just gorgeous already. I love perennials too. I add a few more each year. We've been here 4-1/2 years and still have blank spots in our flower beds. I add some annuals here and there each year and also into pots, but am hoping I can end up with all perennials. I can still get down on my knees and crawl around.. in fact, that's sometimes all I can do as hard to lean over sometimes! I can get down OK, but hard to get up! I hate old age. I have 10 years on you! just wait........ won't be fun. I'm envious too of your white picket fence and arbor. We just dug a flower bed across the back of our back yard and are going to have another bed there and I want mostly roses. Hubby is the one who suggested it, plus an arbor! I was surprised, but he knows I like the "cottage look" so I'm pretty excited. Fence may not come until next year, due to finances, but a girl can dream, right? As one other gal said, I go over everything you do and makes notes for myself (or put it on Pinterest) of ideas from your yard!

  35. Good Afternoon Dear Kris,
Girl, you take the quote "Bloom where you are planted," to a entirely new level!
Your home and gardens are stunning.
I agree with Anita about the importance of a theme and vision when one is creating a landscape. Naturally your gardens are gorgeous but they also flow! With your green thumb those roses will be entwined around your arch within a few weeks.
    Just beautiful my dear,
    Hugs,
    Jemma

  40. You and I are the same age and I found myself thinking the very same thing when planting my annuals this year. Your annuals and perennials are all just gorgeous, Kris! I'm swooning over the bike hanger on your gate. I need to be more diligent with fertilizing my flowers weekly so they grow nice and lush like yours. The door wreath couldn't be more perfect and I want your vintage mailbox.
